Croissant Breakfast Boats

Well hello friends! It’s been a mighty good time since I’ve updated my blog…

Summer is here and it has been a busy time. In addition to my teen and toddler, I am now watching my 2 school age nephews…(phew)….I’m exhausted already 2 weeks in!! LOL. When does school start-up again?

Any who, I’m not a big breakfast eater, but I’ve heard it’s one of the most important meals of the day. To be honest, I feel a difference when I have breakfast vs. when I don’t…more energy. So I figured I’d try something better than the old “cereal and milk” bowl to keep up with these kiddos.

I happened to come across these delicious looking croissant boats when I was searching online for “batch” breakfast ideas. You know, things I can make more than one of to last for the week.

Don’t these look yummy in all their toasty, buttery, glory? They were super simple, quick and easy to make. I got the croissants on sale in the bakery at the grocery store, and with a few simple breakfast staple ingredients, they were ready in no time.

Bakery worthy right? Just zap in the microwave for a few seconds, and breakfast is served. The kids enjoyed them too!

You can find the recipe here at tipbuzz.com. There’s even a tutorial video to show you exactly what to do! Hope you enjoy these!

My Family Dinner Favorites: Double-Cheese Chili (photo: kraft.com)

The Dimestore Gypsy

I hope you’re staying warm where you are. Here in Texas it’s probably the coldest it’s been in a long time!

Today I’m sharing this double-cheese chili from kraft.com. It’s perfect for these cold winter nights. I tweaked a few things to our liking and it was really good.

I  used 90% lean ground beef and seasoned it to my liking. After adding the remaining ingredients, I added a quarter cup of pace mild picante sauce (for extra flavor and veggies), a dash of garlic powder, cumin, salt, pepper, and hot sauce.

To serve, I added the cheese like so in the bottom and ladled a nice hot spoonful of chili on top. I also added a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkle of chopped green onion. Add some Jiffy homemade cornbread and this meal is complete!

If you try this recipe let me know what worked for you!

Stay warm friends,

Holidays

DIY “Dia de los Muertos” Luminaries

For those of you wondering what this is…it’s a  holiday celebrated in Mexican and Latin culture. It’s a happy time to celebrate, remember, and honor friends and family who have passed away and is usually celebrated between Oct. 31st-Nov. 2nd.

According to Mexican folklore, the gates of heaven open for these few days and allow the spirits of the deceased to reunite with their families for 24 hrs. Family and friends of the deceased create altars  with “offerings” of the deceased favorite foods, sugar skulls, sweet bread, candles, marigolds & trinkets. People also dress up and decorate their faces like a sugar skull with jewels and flowers to visit the gravesites.

Today, I wanted to share this simple DIY luminary project you can make yourself!

Supplies:

clean, clear vase

print out of a sugar skull coloring page or a plain skull if you want to design your own

sharpie markers or fabric paint

double-sided tape, regular tape

To Make:

Clean and dry your vase where you will be adding the skull.

Next, cut the skull out leaving a few inches of paper around the edges of the skull and apply it to the inside of the vase with the tape you have on hand.

Now you’re ready to decorate! For this one I used sharpie markers and traced along the lines of the skull. You can use whatever colors you like and get creative!

20171030_103607

20160902_140036

Now remove, your “skull template” and your luminary is finished!

20160902_140056

I didn’t seal these so be careful not to get them wet. The marker will wash off. Each year you can wash them and design a new skull.

Here’s a pic with a few tea lights at night:

I hope you enjoyed this little project and learned something new! Make one for your loved ones and join in on the fun!
